Abstract

Attendance management is a fundamental administrative activity in educational institutions, corporate organizations, and government offices. Conventional attendance recording methods, including manual registers, RFID cards, and biometric systems, often suffer from limitations such as time consumption, human errors, proxy attendance, and increased administrative workload. To address these challenges, this research presents a Face Recognition Based Attendance System that automates attendance recording through advanced computer vision and facial recognition technologies. The proposed system is developed using Python, OpenCV, the Face Recognition library, and SQLite database management. It captures facial images through a webcam, performs face detection and preprocessing, extracts unique facial features, and compares them with stored facial encodings for identification. Once a valid match is identified, the system automatically records attendance along with the corresponding date and time, eliminating the need for manual intervention. The integration of image processing techniques enhances recognition accuracy under varying lighting conditions, facial expressions, and viewing angles. The system provides a contactless, secure, and efficient attendance management mechanism that minimizes attendance fraud and improves operational transparency. Furthermore, the centralized database enables effective storage, retrieval, and reporting of attendance records. Experimental evaluation demonstrates high recognition accuracy, real-time processing capability, and reliable performance in practical environments. The proposed solution significantly reduces administrative effort while enhancing attendance monitoring efficiency. Due to its scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of deployment, the system is well suited for schools, colleges, universities, offices, industries, and other organizations requiring automated and intelligent attendance management solutions.
