Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from the periphery of experimental computing to the centre of managerial practice, reshaping how organisations make decisions, allocate resources, engage customers and manage people. Despite the rapid growth of scholarship on the subject, the literature remains fragmented across functional silos, and the opportunities and risks of AI are frequently examined in isolation from one another. This conceptual study synthesises existing literature to examine the role of AI in modern business management and to articulate an integrated understanding of its opportunities and challenges. Drawing on the technology–organisation–environment framework, the resource-based view, dynamic capabilities theory and the automation–augmentation perspective, the paper develops a conceptual model comprising five interrelated components: AI adoption enablers, AI applications across management functions, the dual effects of AI (opportunities and challenges), organisational outcomes, and moderating governance mechanisms. The model proposes that AI generates sustainable value only when technological capability is matched by organisational readiness, responsible governance, effective human–AI collaboration and continuous workforce development. The discussion elaborates the implications of the model for strategic decision-making, operations, marketing, human resource management and finance, and considers the ethical, social and implementation challenges that accompany adoption. The paper contributes a theoretically grounded and integrative framework that can guide future empirical research and support managers who seek to adopt AI responsibly and effectively.
