Abstract
Image clarity enhancement is a critical pre-processing and restoration task across diverse domains such as photography, medical imaging, satellite sensing, and surveillance. Traditional image enhancement methods often suffer from limitations in handling complex degradations such as noise, blur, and low-light conditions. The advent of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) has revolutionized this field by enabling end-to-end learning of intricate mappings between degraded and high-quality images. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of GAN-based approaches for general image enhancement tasks, including super-resolution, deblurring, denoising, and low-light image enhancement. We systematically analyze state-of-the-art GAN architectures, training strategies, evaluation metrics, and application scenarios. Additionally, we identify prevailing challenges, highlight emerging research trends, and discuss future directions to guide researchers and practitioners in this rapidly evolving area.
