Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled healthcare monitoring combines physiological sensors, low-power wireless communication, gateways and remote software services to support continuous observation outside conventional clinical settings. This methodology paper proposes a structured experimental framework for an IoT-enabled smart healthcare monitoring system using wireless sensors. The system acquires heart rate, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂), body temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG) or activity data and, where appropriate, blood-pressure measurements through wearable or bedside sensor nodes. Sensor readings are transmitted through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), ZigBee or Wi-Fi to a gateway, processed locally for validation and threshold-based alerting, and forwarded to a secure cloud or hospital dashboard for longitudinal monitoring. Foundational IoT studies emphasize the convergence of wireless sensor networks, Internet connectivity and distributed computing, while healthcare-specific surveys demonstrate the importance of wearable sensing, communication standards, privacy and interoperable architectures. IoT-aware hospital architectures have shown that wireless sensors can support continuous collection of patient and environmental data and edge/fog gateways can reduce latency and communication overhead in healthcare IoT. The proposed methodology evaluates sensing accuracy, packet-delivery ratio, end-to-end latency, alert delay, data availability, wireless-node energy consumption and gateway resource utilization under normal, mobility and packet-loss conditions. A prototype can be implemented using microcontroller-based sensor nodes and an edge gateway, while a patient-monitoring dataset or calibrated reference devices are used for validation. Because no patient dataset or hardware logs were supplied, the Results section provides illustrative expected patterns rather than fabricated clinical measurements. The framework is intended for engineering evaluation and not for diagnosis or replacement of certified medical equipment.
