The Evolving Art of Archery: From Traditional Practices to Modern Technology
Keywords:
Abstract
World Archery, the international governing body for the sport, partnered with Tabrasco Ltd to monitor athletes’ heart rates. The objective was to provide television audiences with insight into the physiological responses athletes experience during major tournaments. This paper outlines the journey that resulted in real-time heartbeat monitoring at World Cup events through a non-invasive method that athletes readily accepted. Archery, the practice of using a bow and arrow, is a highly refined skill that requires significant time and dedication to master. In modern society, it is largely pursued as a recreational or competitive activity rather than a survival necessity. Historically, however, bows and arrows played a vital role in hunting and securing food. Even today, some remote communities and indigenous groups continue to rely on traditional bows, which generally impose a smaller environmental footprint compared to more technologically advanced hunting tools. Archery, the skill of using a bow and arrow, remains a discipline that demands patience, coordination, and extensive practice. In modern societies, it is largely pursued as a recreational activity or competitive sport rather than a necessity for survival. Nevertheless, the historical importance of bows as tools for acquiring food is undeniable. Even today, certain remote communities and indigenous groups continue to rely on traditional bows. Although such methods may be less efficient compared to modern alternatives, they generally impose a smaller environmental impact, reflecting a more sustainable interaction with natural resources.
