Abstract

India, as an emerging economy, is facing the challenges of the rapid and uncontrolled urbanization. Production
and subsequent management of municipal solid waste has been emerged as a major challenge for the various
stakeholders. A major component of municipal solid waste is biomass that can be utilized to produce electricity which in
turn reduces the load on Municipal Corporation. Study shows that most of the solid waste is discarded illogically in open
dumps which pose a major concern to public health and environment. The unhygienic disposal of animal biomass could
result into a serious health concern due to spread of many pathogens via various environmental matrices. The present
study reviews the various concerns and methods used for the sustainable utilization of biomass solid waste.
