Abstract

The increasing accumulation of plastic waste and the environmental consequences associated with petroleum-based polymers have created an urgent demand for sustainable alternatives. Green eco-friendly polymers and advanced biodegradable materials have emerged as promising solutions for reducing dependence on fossil resources and minimizing environmental pollution. These materials are designed using renewable feedstocks, environmentally responsible synthesis methods, and improved end-of-life management strategies. This review discusses recent developments in sustainable polymers, including biodegradable plastics, bio-based polymers, natural fiber composites, and environmentally friendly functional materials. The study highlights important categories such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), starch-based polymers, cellulose-derived materials, and other renewable polymer systems. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of scientific literature focusing on material properties, environmental performance, biodegradability, and industrial applications. The results indicate that eco-friendly polymers possess significant potential in packaging, agriculture, biomedical applications, and advanced manufacturing. However, challenges including high production costs, limited mechanical performance, processing difficulties, and incomplete biodegradation under natural conditions remain barriers to large-scale adoption. Continuous research in green chemistry, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and polymer engineering is expected to improve the performance and commercial feasibility of sustainable materials. The development of environmentally responsible polymers represents an important pathway toward reducing plastic pollution and achieving a circular economy.
